The Mysterious Snood

I hadn’t really heard of a snood before talking with my friend Kristina over the Thanksgiving holiday.  So, what’s a girl to do but get on Ravelry and figure out what all the fuss is about?  There are some cute patterns out there – just in case you’re wondering.  When you start looking around on the internet, you’ll find that some of these babies are expensive!  The one I ended up making is a knock-off of a Burburry snood that is reported to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $300!

The pattern I used is the Snooty Snood Pattern (Ravelry link).  It’s a pretty basic pattern and in hindsight I shouldn’t have paid $7 for the pattern, but I’m lazy.  It turns out though that I had to modify the pattern.  I decided to try to graft the ends together to make it seamless since you can pull this up onto your head, and who wants a seam running down the top of her head?  The cable cross rows on the pattern also aren’t right – it’s an 8 row repeat and on one of them she wants you to cross the cables after the 4th row.  It was a fun pattern to knit and was really quick!  I love quick knits this time of year!

I used 3 skeins of Berroco Ultra Alpaca and held 2 strands together.  I used a size 11 24″ circular addi and because I used addis I had to use a cable needle – no cabling without a cable needle with those tree trunks!  I love the tweed yarn and the cabled fluffy goodness of this pattern (the color is really off in the next two pictures, but I couldn’t manipulate the pictures enough to make it accurate – sorry).

The grafting didn’t work out quite as well as I’d hoped, but I don’t think a non-knitter will be able to see it.  What do you think?

This baby was mailed off this morning and is on her way to Canada.  The post office said 7-10 days, which makes it arrive before Christmas.  Let’s hope that’s the case!

Well, first, HI, and glad to see a post! Second, is that a guy or a girl in the first picture? Third, who IS that in the second picture (your hair is just a bit different from the last picture I saw of you!)? Finally, this snood business cracks me up. This thing they are calling a snood isn’t a snood to a child of the 40’s (sigh) and 50’s. A snood is a net thingy that covers your hair when pulled to the back. Picture Bette Davis in some old B&W movie. Oh, well. Yours was quite lovely, whatever you kids want to call it!

Your grafting looks fantastic! Thanks for educating me on the snood – I’ve seen them around, but now I know what they are called :-)

Boy, I don’t know, your grafting looks pretty darn good to me! Quick knits this time of year are key.

WOW! I agree – the grafting looks fantastic :) It’s the cabling that scares me beyond belief!! How can you even say “quick knit?” :)
