Cake Pops

I couldn’t resist any longer.  I saw Bakerella do cake pops over at Pioneer Woman.  I saw her easter cake pops.  I knew cake & frosting combined and put on a stick would be a huge hit with the powers that be.  So, I bought the ingredients (I couldn’t find some of the “special” stuff locally, but managed to make do) and gave it a whirl.

Let me just start by saying … it’s harder than it looks.  I made the cake – Devil’s Food – with a box mix that I tweaked ala The Cake Mix Doctor and used a tub of cream cheese frosting.  An entire tub was too much.  I needed to use somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of the tub, but I knew there would be a learning curve involved, so it wasn’t a big deal.  I couldn’t find an 1.25″ flower cookie cutter – the only one I could get locally was an 1.5″, and it was a bit too large, but since this was just practice, I made the best of it.

I made some of the cake balls into the cupcake pops and some I just left as balls and covered with chocolate – both were yummy but the balls were a lot less work!  There is definitely some skill in getting the chocolate to the right temperature so that it stays where you put it, but it isn’t too thick to get a smooth surface.  Some turned out better than others, but they all tasted good.

I don’t know what it is, but there’s something so awesome about being able to eat cake without a plate or a fork.  It’s like candy, only better.  Yum!

Ok, yum. Those look so awesome! I can’t wait to try it myself – they seems great as an Easter project. If you get the right molds you might be able to make them easter egg shaped and then decorate them just so like an easter egg.

I’d like to thank you for finding the perfect way to waste my weekend away :) I spent almost the entire rest of the week looking at cake blogs! I just had to try these, so here are the pops I made. They were a big hit on Easter, especially with the 6 year old!
